Netflix has removed its “basic” C$9.99 per month subscription tier for new and returning Canadian subscribers.
Those wanting to sign up for the streaming service now have the choice of its C$5.99 ad-supported plan or those looking for an ad-free experience can pay C$16.49 per month for the standard plan. There is also a C$20.99 premium plan.
The basic plan was ad-free but was limited to one user and 720p.
Users who are currently using the basic plan can remain on the plan until they change plans or cancel their account, Netflix said on its support page.
Analysts at Oppenheimer are bullish on the move, forecasting that Netflix’s shift from its lowest-priced ad-free tier could unlock about $4.4 billion in annual revenue.
