NanoViricides commences clinical trials for its broad-spectrum antiviral drug NV-CoV-2

NanoViricides Inc (NYSE-A:NNVC) has announced that clinical trials for its broad-spectrum antiviral drug NV-CoV-2 commenced on June 17, 2023.

The trials will evaluate the safety and efficacy of two oral drug products: NV-CoV-2 Oral Syrup and NV-CoV-2 Oral Gummies.

In a statement, Dr Anil Diwan, president and executive chairman commented: "We believe that the start of the Phase 1a/1b safety and efficacy clinical trial is an important milestone not only for NanoViricides and Karveer Meditech, India, but for the whole world."

He explained: "NV-CoV-2 is aimed at satisfying the as-yet-unmet medical need for a highly effective broad-spectrum, pan-coronavirus drug that can be used for all patient populations. Further, we believe the nanoviricides technology adds a valuable tool to the basket of worldwide preparedness and response strategies for future viral pandemics."

NanoViricides is a clinical-stage global leader in the development of antiviral therapies based on its nanomedicines platform. NV-CoV-2, the company's lead drug candidate for coronavirus infections including COVID-19 and potentially long COVID, is now entering Phase 1a/1b human clinical trials sponsored by Karveer Meditech Pvt. Ltd. in India.

The Phase 1a trial will assess the safety and tolerability of the drug in healthy subjects, while Phase 1b will enroll patients with mild to moderate COVID-19 to evaluate its efficacy.

The clinical trial labeled KM-NVCoV2-001 is being conducted at Mahatma Gandhi Mission's Medical College and Hospital in Aurangabad, India. The hospital, with its state-of-the-art facilities, has treated thousands of COVID-19 patients and has experience in conducting clinical trials for COVID drugs.

NanoViricides' NV-CoV-2 is designed to attack the virus directly using a multi-pronged approach, disabling its ability to infect human cells and progress the infection. The company believes this novel mechanism of action could become a vital tool for combating future viral pandemics.

NanoViricides' collaboration with Karveer Meditech in India aims to commercialize NV-CoV-2 and NV-CoV-2-R, the company's COVID drugs, in the Indian market. Karveer Meditech has partnered with PristynCR Solutions to develop and execute the clinical trials for these drugs.

NanoViricides is dedicated to developing antiviral therapies using its technology platform. The company holds a worldwide exclusive perpetual license to the TheraCour nanomedicine technology for various viral diseases.
