Thames Water boss stands down weeks after after giving up bonus

Thames Water boss Sarah Bentley has stepped down just weeks after giving up a bonus due to the poor environmental performance of the Capital’s water and sewage provider.

Bentley has stepped own immediately, Thames Water but will be available until a new full-time boss is identified.

Even after giving up the bonus, Bentley was subject to fierce criticism, with the GMB union highlighting that her salary had still doubled to £1.5mln.

Ian Marchant, Thames’ chairman, thanked Bentley for her efforts since joining in 2020 and leading the first phase of the turnaround of the company.

Bentley said: “The foundations of the turnaround that we have laid position the company for future success to improve service for customers and environmental performance.”

Water companies across the country have faced a public outcry over the widespread and continuous dumping of sewage into the nation’s rivers.
