Week ahead: AB Foods, Carnival, B&M, Petrofac, Nike (and the second Ashes test)

Primark owner AB Foods, cruise giant Carnival, budget retailer B&M, online card seller Moonpig and energy services provider Petrofac are among the wide array of companies in the spotlight in the coming week.

UK GDP and house prices, US inflation and central bank speeches are among the major macro agenda items.

Also likely to grab some attention in the City, the second Ashes test match begins on Wednesday at Lord’s Cricket Ground in London, with plenty of City folk on jollies in the ground's extensive corporate hospitality suites.

MONDAY 26 JUNE

Associated British Foods PLC (LSE:ABF) is due to release a second-quarter update on Monday, with the Primark owner's shares having risen 55% from last autumn's near-decade low.

Analysts and investors will be keen to hear about the click-and-collect trial across 25 stores in the UK, along with the impact of inflation, which it said was a key factor in the first quarter.

Carnival PLC (LSE:CCL) is another share that has been on the rise, with this the first statement since April’s update revealed its highest ever quarterly level of booking volumes.

While the shares have almost doubled so far this year, they are still trading 64% below pre-pandemic levels and, one analyst said, a "mountain of work" is left to do, leading with cutting debt.

The update will see investors and analysts "look for further evidence of conversion in the multi-billion dollar pipeline and for comfort that there are no more nasty surprises to emerge from some of the troubled legacy contracts", said one analyst.

WEDNESDAY 28 JUNE

Midweek there is quite a quiet day in terms of company news and macroeconomic data, making it perfect timing for the Ashes test at Lord’s to begin, as England look to fight back from Australia’s last-day win in the first of the series.

However for the keen investors before the cricket starts, there are some company updates, including from FTSE 250-listed SDCL Energy Efficiency Income Trust updates with its shares down 22% so far this year.

Analysts at Stifel said much of the sector’s share prices have continued to be "soggy" as macro factors drive sentiment, while SDCL’s eclectic mix of assets “has made understanding its proposition difficult” but the hard data in this week’s results could help it make further progress on explaining its attractions.

Elsewhere, Marlowe PLC (AIM:MRL) shares have recently soared on reports the fire safety company, which is backed by former Conservative Party treasurer Lord Ashcroft, is looking at selling its biggest division.

The company yet has not commented on this yet.

In the US, the annual banking stress test will be in focus after the wobbles among regional lenders this year.

Chip maker Micron Technology will report quarterly numbers, with Wall Street expecting earnings to be down compared to a year ago as it gets hit by the partial ban on selling to some Chinese companies.

There are also reports from BlackBerry, which last month was reported to be eyeing a possible break-up, and packaged food giant General Mills (NYSE:GIS), where the owner of Cheerios, Pillsbury and Häagen-Daz is seen to still be facing more hits from retailers reducing their inventory levels.

THURSDAY 29 JUNE

B&M European Value Retail is another of this week’s stocks on the rise, edging back towards all-time highs after announcing last month that sales for the first nine weeks of the financial year were up by 8.3%.

Analysts said the update put to bed any concerns about an easing of the trend towards trading down and expects confirmation of healthy trading in Thursday’s trading update.

There should also be a massive from Moonpig, where investors need a get well soon card after the listless share price performance since it IPOed over two years ago.

Investors will be keen to get an update after guidance was cut earlier this year.

In the US, earnings from Nike should grab attention, though analysts at UBS said while the company is long-term outperformer the upcoming earnings will be a negative catalyst.
