HBO shows like 'Insecure' could soon come to Netflix in licensing deal

Netflix Inc (NASDAQ:NFLX) subscribers may soon be able to watch certain HBO original series on the platform.

Warner Bros Discovery Inc (NASDAQ:WBD) CEO David Zaslav is considering licensing shows including Insecure, which starred Issa Rae and ran for five seasons, according to reporting from Deadline.

The pre-merger regime at HBO reportedly opposed such an agreement, but with the network already having to make cancellations and implement layoffs over the past year, licensing shows could generate revenue.

The deal is by no means done, though. According to reports, there is still time for the framework to fall apart.

If it were to occur, the agreement would be nonexclusive, meaning the licensed shows would still be available on WBD’s newly rebranded platform Max.

Earlier this year, WBD sold a package of canceled shows including Westworld to free ad-supported television (FAST) networks including Roku and Tubi earlier this year.

The company has decidedly taken steps to prioritize revenue over subscriber growth, at least in the short term. Following the merger, he declared the combined company “open for business.”

WBD shares traded 2% lower Thursday afternoon at $12.11.
