Active Energy Group PLC said it has secured a European Union trademark for its proprietary CoalSwitch 'black pellet' biomass technology.
The European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) provided its sign-off (registration number 018826869), adding to similar approvals in the US and the UK and further bolstering the company's intellectual property portfolio.
CoalSwitch, Active Energy's advanced biomass technology, has demonstrated significant potential in reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
An independent report by Life Cycle Associates found it can cut CO2 emissions by up to 99% compared with coal and up to 97% compared to natural gas.
These findings support earlier tests under the STEP programme, which demonstrated the technology's capacity to co-fire with coal, significantly reducing emissions and pollutants.
The registration of CoalSwitch in the EU marks an important milestone for Active Energy as it continues to develop and expand its environmentally friendly energy solutions, the company said.
Chief executive Michael Rowan told investors: "The award of this trademark is another great step for AEG and the development of CoalSwitch.
"We now have trademarks in the US, UK and European Union and we continue to focus on protecting and growing our intellectual property portfolio as we deliver on our strategy of producing a next-generation biomass pellet."
