Vera Therapeutics, Inc shares climbed 20% to $15.38 on Tuesday after the late-stage biotechnology company revealed positive trial results for atacicept, its treatment for an autoimmune disease of the kidney known as Immunoglobulin A Nephropathy (IgAN) or Berger's disease.
Vera said the Phase 2b ORIGIN trial met its primary and key secondary endpoints, with statistically significant and clinically meaningful reductions in proteinuria and stabilization of eGFR through week 36.
In addition, the atacicept 150 milligram (mg) group achieved a 64% reduction from baseline at week 36 in Gd-IgA1.
Safety results, meanwhile, indicated that atacicept was generally well tolerated.
The week 36 results of ORIGIN were presented at the 60th European Renal Association Congress, the company stated.
Vera added that longer-term results, including the ongoing eGFR data from the Phase 2b ORIGIN clinical trial, are planned for presentation later in 2023 and 2024.
Berger's occurs when a germ-fighting protein called immunoglobulin A builds up in the kidneys, causing a type of swelling that, over time, can make it harder for the kidneys to filter waste from the blood, according to the Mayo Clinic's website.
Shares of Vera Therapeutics have gained 5% over the past 52 weeks and 31% during the last five years.
