Airbus Group (EPA:AIR) has closed a record order with Indian budget airline IndiGo, amid a host of dealmaking taking place at the Paris Air Show on Monday.
Airbus will supply IndiGo with 500 narrow-body A320 variants under the anticipated US$50bn deal, outdoing the industry's previous record order for 470 plans by Air India earlier this year.
IndiGo now has 1,330 orders placed with Airbus, according to the aviation manufacturing giant, with the latest deal marking the largest ever in the history of commercial aviation.
IndiGo already operates hundreds of Airbus A320 and A321 variants in its roughly 300-strong fleet, with these powered by Pratt & Whitney and CFM International engines.
Airbus chief commercial officer Christian Scherer dubbed the deal a “landmark” order, adding, “we look forward to contributing to the growth of India’s air connectivity”.
Deals for new Airbus aircraft have also been made with Air Mauritius and Saudi low-cost carrier Flynas on the opening day of the Paris Air Show.
Airbus shares rose 0.6% to €123.
