AI in movie production: the dawn of a new era

Written by Drylab Media Tech's chief strategy officer Stein B Kvae

With my roots firmly planted in the field of movie production as a long-time producer and my vision crystalized in the world of technology through co-founding Drylab, I stand at the crossroads of these two domains, bearing witness to a seismic shift in our industry.

When we embarked on the Drylab journey, our conviction was the infinite value of metadata within movie production.

At the onset, data was a mere auxiliary tool, useful in quickly sorting and locating clips amidst the plethora of material, often seen as a grating chore with no immediate payoff. However, we envisioned its latent potential.

Maintaining my role as a producer while spearheading Drylab, alongside esteemed cinematographer John Christian Rosenlund and Andreas Herzog, Norway's pioneering digital imaging technician, has always been paramount.

Our shared belief underscores the need for software to resonate deeply with the user to truly serve its purpose.

Coined as "made by filmmakers, for filmmakers," Drylab was born with the objective of "Create Better," optimising creativity and efficiency in every dollar spent.

The infiltration of AI into our daily routines and workplaces has been nothing short of remarkable. A recent seminar at the Danish Film Institute that highlighted AI in our industry reaffirmed the magnitude of this change.

The panorama of AI tools permeating the movie business is expansive, including script analysis with Scriptbook, visualisation with Laika and Cyberfilm, image creation with Runway, CGI animation with Wonder Studio, post-production with Adobe Firefly and Descript, and music generation with Audoir, Aiva, and Soundful, among others. This list is not static, but dynamic and continually growing.

The advent of digital tools in movie production sparked conversations around democratisation, yet that didn't quite materialise.

The cost of production remained high, and while these tools broadened the creative spectrum, they did not necessarily enhance efficiency or provide budget-friendly solutions.

We are now on the cusp of this change, bracing for a wave of outstanding content from the most unexpected corners of the world.

This is the epoch where movie production encounters disruption, allowing talent from every corner of the world to find their spotlight.

For a producer, this transformation may be intimidating. Producers have traditionally held the keys to the kingdom, gathering and controlling finances.

As the democratisation of movie production swells and content flourishes, producers may need to adopt a more editorial role, akin to that in the publishing sector.

We may not fully predict the extent of this disruption, but it is clear that the producer's role will not remain untouched, especially with streaming platforms increasingly transitioning to in-house production.

This seismic shift paints an exciting future for Drylab.

As a software that capitalises on the power of data, the lifeblood of machine learning and AI, Drylab stands at the forefront of these changes.

Despite the myriad of AI tools developed for filmmaking, few address the on-set environment. That is where Drylab comes into play.

Drylab is dedicated to enhancing the on-set experience by harnessing AI to keep all stakeholders informed, in real time.

Our development encompasses tools for automatic rough cut assembly, immediate axis and shot feasibility testing, automatic clapper detection to expedite dailies, automatic favourites lists to trim down viewing times, and even real-time translation to accommodate international executives.

We have also delved into analysing shot data to understand framing distribution, such as close-ups and wides.

In this brave new world of movie production, Drylab is not just a spectator but an active participant, shaping the future where AI and creativity interweave seamlessly to deliver unforgettable cinematic experiences.

As we stand on the precipice of this revolution, we invite you to join us in witnessing the dawn of a new era.
