Spectral MD hails findings of peer-reviewed journal

Spectral MD Holdings Ltd (AIM:SMD) has announced the successful completion of a key study underscoring the potential of its innovative DeepView technology.

The evaluation, published in the peer-reviewed Journal of Burn Care & Research, suggests that artificial intelligence (AI) can greatly enhance the speed and accuracy of burn wound assessment.

Currently, the Spectral MD technology boasts 92% accuracy in determining healing versus nonhealing tissue in burn wounds.

Practically, this means doctors can decide with a degree of certainty which medical course to take - surgery for deep-lying wounds, or simple dressings where the burns will heal naturally.

"We believe that the need for fast, accurate, and binary burn wound assessment technology represents a critical unmet medical need," said the company's CEO, Wensheng Fan in a statement.

He added: "Currently, the incorrect judgement of burn depth remains common among even experienced surgeons. Moreover, specialised burn training for new doctors is becoming less common as it is no longer required during medical residency."

"The results of this study underlined the feasibility of DeepView® for detecting healing and non-healing burn tissue, and subsequent studies have continued to demonstrate its reliability and increased accuracy compared to the current standard of care," Fan concluded.
