Ford Motor Co announced on Tuesday that it is expanding its recall and issuing a new recall for 125,000 sport utility vehicles (SUVs) and trucks due to engine failures that may result in fires.
The recall applies to various models of Escape and Lincoln Corsair SUVs, as well as Maverick compact pickup trucks from the 2020-2023 model years, equipped with 2.5L hybrid or plug-in hybrid engines.
According to a filing with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Ford identified isolated engine manufacturing issues that could cause premature engine failure, leading to the release of engine oil or fuel vapor, thereby increasing the risk of fire and injury.
The car manufacturer initially recalled 100,000 vehicles in July 2022 following reports of fires or smoke after suspected block or oil pan breaches. Since then, Ford has received reports of at least three vehicles catching fire after receiving the 2022 recall fix.
Ford and the NHTSA have advised owners to park their vehicles and turn off the engine if they hear unexpected engine noises, experience a reduction in vehicle power, or observe smoke.
The development of a new recall fix is currently underway, according to Ford. It plans to add an in-line fuse to the battery monitor sensor power circuit as part of the recall repair process.
