In a major step towards meeting the United Nations standard for transporting lithium batteries, Magnis Energy Technologies Ltd (ASX:MNS, OTCQX:MNSEF) has completed all seven applicable UN38.3 tests on cells produced by its Imperium3 New York (iM3NY) subsidiary.
Testing on the final batch of cells in the final test, known as T8, was concluded progressively on Friday, with no pending active tests for the supplied batch.
Magnis is the major shareholder of iM3NY with a 61% stake.
UN38.3 Cell Certification process
Report in two weeks
Of the 20 cells tested, 10 have already completed the mandatory observation period of seven days.
Once the remaining cells have met their compulsory observation period, an official audited report regarding compliance with the UN38.3 certification will be issued within two weeks.
Commercial cell production at the battery plant in Endicott, NY, started in August last year, with independent certification beginning in late 2022 following the completion of internal qualification processes.
Safe transport certification
UN38.3 is a United Nations standard that lithium batteries must meet to achieve certification for safe transport in large quantities, be it by air, sea, rail or road.
iM3NY’s achievement of the certification also means it meets the standards required by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and the United States Department of Transportation (DOT).
