Apple climbed to within a whisker of its all-time high as investors piled into the iPhone maker ahead of the launch of a new virtual reality headset possibly later today.
Shortly after US trading opened, shares in the tech giant were up 1.6% at US$183.0, valuing the group at US$2.9trn with demand fuelled by what Apple watchers says might be the company’s biggest launch for years.
Unusually, if the widely leaked stories are accurate, Apple will unveil its new headset at its annual event for software developers, known as WWDC, where updates for existing products such as iPhones, iPads, and Macs generally appear.
An Apple headset has long been rumoured, and reports suggest the company will finally unveil its first foray into an increasingly crowded field during Monday's event.
Meta had as already poured billions into its virtual reality business and like its headset, reports ahead of the event sources said Apple’s device will be a mix of real and virtual worlds displayed on screens inside the headset.
If confirmed, it would be the firm's first entirely new product since the Apple Watch debuted in 2015.
The conference kicks off today and ends on June 9.
