Waitrose has slashed its milk prices after similar cuts were made by J Sainsbury PLC (LSE:SBRY) and Tesco PLC (LSE:TSCO).
The group said it had begun with company-wide cuts in April, despite being the only supermarket to only provide free-range milk.
Customers have reported that further cuts have continued, with the price of 2 pints of milk dropping from £1.30 to £1.09.
The UK group noted that farmers would still be paid fairly.
Four pints of milk can now be bought for £1.65, having been at £1.70 in early April according to the Evening Standard.
On Tuesday, photos of empty shelves at Waitrose began circulating around social media after an IT glitch led to widespread availability issues.
"We apologise to all our customers for the severe disruption to our supply chain at the moment. We are working hard to resolve the issues as quickly as possible," a sign in stores read.
At the start of 2023, the high-end supermarket said it would be investing £100mln into lowering prices for customers.
The news comes a month after Tesco slashed the price of a pint down to 90p having previously been at 95p.
Earlier this week, Sainsbury’s launched a nationwide cut to 40 of its dairy products with some items dropping by up to 60%.
The drop in prices has come after ten consecutive months, bar December, of falling world dairy prices, according to the FAO world food price index.
In fact, the inflation rate of world dairy prices in May was lower than the average rate in 2021, prior to the Ukraine war lifting prices.
Tesco Clubcard
The supermarket chain announced earlier this year that its Clubcard rewards pay-out would be reduced as of June 14.
The Tesco Clubcard reward partner scheme offers customers a chance to exchange points for vouchers for theme parks, restaurants, and day trips.
Points that are converted to these vouchers currently exchange for triple their value, but as of mid-June this will change to double.
