CD Projekt, a Polish video game developer and publisher of the popular The Witcher game, has officially denied a persistent rumor that it is in talks with Sony about being acquired, asserting that no negotiations are taking place.
“I can repeat what we've been saying throughout the year, CD Projekt is not for sale,” CD Projekt CEO Adam Kiciński said during the company’s quarterly investor call.
“We want to remain independent.”
The rumor of a Sony deal surfaced in March and has persisted since despite no real evidence to support it, according to PC Gamer.
The publication also wrote that speculation of a CD Projekt sale can be traced back as far as 2015 when Electronic Arts was reportedly looking to buy the studio, a rumor that flared up again a year later after CD Projekt made some behind-the-scenes moves as “insurance” against a hypothetical hostile takeover.
The acquisition speculation is happening as the company revealed that The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt has sold over 50 million copies globally, and the series as a whole has exceeded 75 million copies sold.
PC Gamer noted that CD Projekt is about to start promoting the upcoming Cyberpunk 2077 expansion Phantom Liberty, which will get its first real airing at the Summer Game Fest on June 8.
