Ford Motor Co announced on Thursday an agreement with Tesla Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) to allow its electric vehicle (EV) owners to gain access to more than 12,000 Tesla Superchargers in North America in early 2024.
Ford noted that its next generation of EVs will include Tesla’s charging plug, allowing owners of Ford vehicles to charge at Tesla Superchargers network without an adapter.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk and Ford CEO Jim Farley revealed the initiatives during a live, audio discussion on Twitter Spaces.
“It’s an honor to be working with a great company like Ford,” Musk said during the joint announcement.
Ford sold 61,575 electric vehicles in the US last year, second only to Tesla.
Farley added that the company is “totally committed” to a single US charging protocol that includes the Tesla plug port, known as NACS.
White House officials reported in February that Tesla committed to allowing non-Tesla EV drivers access to 7,500 of its charging stations by the end of 2024.
According to Tesla’s first-quarter investor presentation, the company has about 45,000 Supercharger connectors worldwide at 4,947 Supercharger Stations, although it does not disclose chargers by country or revenue from the devices.
