Sigma Lithium Corp (TSX-V:SGML, NASDAQ:SGML) is making waves with its groundbreaking 'Zero Tailings' environmental sustainability strategy which has successfully eliminated the environmental impact of tailings, setting a new standard for eco-friendly lithium production.
The achievement was accompanied by the first payment received by Sigma Lithium for its inaugural shipment under the Green Tailings Environmental Offtake agreement. Yahua International Investment and Development Co. Ltd. has committed to purchasing 100% of the company's Green Tailings for up to three years, marking a significant step forward for sustainable battery materials.
In a statement, Ana Cabral-Gardner, CEO and co-chairperson of Sigma Lithium, commented: "Achieving Zero Tailings marks a major milestone for Sigma Lithium and for the battery materials industry."
She emphasized the company's dedication to harmonizing lithium production with environmental preservation, enabling the development of a sustainable global supply chain to meet the growing demand for lithium in electric vehicles (EV).
The Green Tailings Environmental Offtake agreement encompasses the sale of up to 300,000 tonnes of Green Tailings annually for three years. These tailings will be upcycled into battery-grade lithium concentrate, playing a crucial role in the production of electric vehicle batteries. Additionally, Sigma Lithium has entered into a spot sale agreement with Yahua for the sale of 15,000 tonnes of Green Lithium.
Yahua, a renowned lithium chemical refiner for EV, holds significant market influence and partnerships with industry leaders like LG Chem and LG Energy Solution.
Sigma Lithium's success in achieving Zero Tailings is a testament to its ongoing commitment to clean technologies. The company's Greentech Plant, powered entirely by renewable energy, employs 100% recycled water and adopts dry-stacked tailings, exemplifying environmental sustainability.
Furthermore, Sigma Lithium's dedication to green lithium production is contributing to Brazil's role in the energy transition. By collaborating with government leaders, the company aims to make a positive impact on the communities in Vale do Jequitinhonha, also known as Lithium Valley.
With the successful trucking and stockpiling of Green Lithium and Green Tailings, Sigma Lithium is well on track to meet its shipment goals and ramp up volumes for 2023. The company's Grota do Cirilo Project in Brazil is a prime example of its commitment to high-purity, environmentally sustainable lithium production.
