VinFast recalls EVs in US over crash risk

Vietnamese electric car maker VinFast is recalling certain 2023 VF8 vehicles shipped to the United States on a software error which “may increase the risk of a crash.”

Due to the error, the multifunction head unit display may go blank, meaning it will not show critical safety information such as the speedometer or warning lights, according to a recall notice from the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

The potential number of vehicles affected is 999, all of which were vehicles shipped to the US.

Of these 999, 111 are in customers’ hands, 153 are in company fleet service, and the remaining 735 are under VinFast’s control and custody, according to the NHTSA’s recall report.

“VinFast is not aware of any field reports of incidents in the United States on vehicles in customer hands or in company fleet service,” it said.

VinFast intends to release an over-the-air software update starting May 25, 2023, free of charge, to remedy the issue.
