Lidl hikes wages for third time in a year

Lidl has hiked the wages of its store and warehouse staff for the third time in the last 12 months.

Employees outside of London will see their pay increase to £11.40 from £11, up to £12.30 depending on the length of service.

Those within the M25 will see their wages hiked to £12.85 from £11.95, rising to £13.15.

All 24,500 store and warehouse colleagues will now receive an entry-level pay 16% higher than “traditional and premium priced” competitors.

The German discount retailer said the move represents an overall investment of £8mln, and a combined investment of £60mln over the last year.

“These new rates of pay will ensure that Lidl maintains its position as the UK’s highest-paying supermarket,” said Ryan McDonnell, Lidl GB CEO.

“Our people are at the core of everything we do, and this investment recognises the hard work and contribution they make in serving communities across the country every day.”

Today’s announcement comes on the back of Lidl’s plans to recruit over 1,500 warehouse staff at its regional distribution centre (RDC) as part of its attempts to restructure.

The group’s biggest warehouse globally will open in Luton, while plans for an additional RDC in Leeds have also been submitted, creating an additional 400 jobs.
