Wise finance chief steps down to recover from bike accident

Wise has announced its chief financial officer is to step down to recuperate fully from a cycling accident last year.

Matthew Briers, who has been CFO at the fintech payments disruptor for eight years, said it was time to think about his future at the firm.

In a statement, Briers revealed that it had been a "horrible accident" where he gone under the wheels of a bus.

“Wise will likely have many CFOs in its first century and this is simply me starting the process of handing over the reins to the next one,” he said, adding his focus will now shift to “making a full recovery”

Wise appointed an interim finance director when Briers had the accident in February 2022, though he subsequently returned to work in May of that year.

His departure might leave the fintech group short of senior managers later this year as Kristo Kaarman, chief executive and co-founder, recently announced he would step away from the business for three months between September and December to go on paternity leave.

In his absence, Harsh Sinha, chief technology officer, will run the business temporarily.

Wise said it had started the process of looking for a new CFO, with Kaarman adding: “Matt joined us at the time when only around 500,000 people had used Wise and we were losing money.

“He helped us scale up into a global service that today 16 million people and businesses around the world know they can count on.”

Founded in 2011, Wise was one of the early pioneers of the UK fintech movement and floated in 2021 with a valuation of more than £8bn, though today it is worth closer to £6bn.

Shares eased 2.6% lower to 584.2p.
