KULR wins $1.1M contract with US army to develop high-energy battery packs

KULR Technology Group said it has been awarded a $1.13 million contract by the United States army to develop a high-energy battery storage platform using silicon anode lithium-ion cells.

The company said it would use its KULR ONE Design Solutions platform to fast-track the design through prototyping phases into manufacturing for advanced aviation applications by the US Army.

“Our breakthrough KULR ONE Design Solutions has enabled leading aerospace, electronics, and energy storage manufacturers to develop lighter, safer, and more thermally efficient products,” said KULR CEO Michael Mo in a statement.

“Now, by developing next-generation high-energy silicon anode battery packs into smaller and lighter power sources for deployed applications, we can implement measures that enhance the capabilities and resilience of soldiers in the field. We are very excited to help solve the difficult problems facing operational preparedness for the US Armed Forces and its allies.”

The KULR ONE Design Solutions platform uses comprehensive design and testing methodology for battery safety including Fractional Thermal Runaway Calorimetry, bomb calorimetry, and impingement zone mapping, performing a comprehensive cell-level characterization of the thermal runaway behavior of the customer’s cells.

Additionally, the cells used for the batteries will be screened by the company’s newly completed cell screening automation line, KULR said.

The company said development activities for the contract began at the end of April and are set to run through to early 2024.

KULR is a leading energy management platform company offering proven solutions that play a critical role in accelerating the electrification of the circular economy.
