Shopping at Aldi in April would have provided shoppers with the best deals compared to other major supermarkets such as Tesco and Sainsbury’s, research from Which? found.
A basket of 39 supermarket groceries which includes staples like milk, bread, and tea bags would have cost £69.99 at Aldi last month
The same basket at rival German discount store, Lidl, cost 65p more at £70.64 – slightly wider than the 25p gap between the two seen in March.
On the other end of the scale, Waitrose came in as the most expensive, with a basket setting shoppers back £87.33 – a whopping £17.34 more than Aldi.
Sitting in the middle of the range were retail giants Asda, Sainsbury’s and Tesco.
All three charged around £77 for the shopping basket in April, with Tesco slightly pricier at £78.09.
Ele Clark, Which? retail editor, said: “The price of food and drink has continued to soar as people suffer through the worst cost of living crisis in decades.
“It’s no surprise to see many people turning to discounters like Aldi and Lidl when our research shows they could save up to £17 on a basket of everyday groceries by doing so.”

The consumer champion also measures the cost of the contents of a shopping trolley, which compares 135 goods including branded items such as Cathedral City cheese and Andrex toilet paper.
Both Aldi and Lidl are excluded from this comparison as neither sells a full range of branded products.
Asda ranked the cheapest in April for this category, with a trolley costing £343.46, almost ten pounds cheaper than second best Sainsbury’s which charged £353.96 for the same products.
Again, at the top end of the scale was Waitrose costing almost £40 more than Asda at £382.22.
