Price of roast dinner surges 24%, or 19% more for fish and chips according to new ONS tool

The cost of making a roast chicken dinner or cooking a fry-up at home has gone up 24% in a year, while for a cheese omelette shop prices have risen 41%, according to official data.

A new shopping prices comparison tool has been launched by the Office for National Statistics, tracking changes in grocery items as well as takeaway food, echoing research from Which that found similar rises in supermarket prices.

It shows the price of hard cheese rose 44% and eggs were up 32% in the UK in the 12 months to March, while a litre of olive oil soared 49%, a tin of baked beans 39% and a packet of pasta 24%.

Putting together the elements for a cheese omelette now costs 41% more than a year ago.

Buying all the elements of a roast chicken dinner for four has risen to a price of £8.68, up £1.68 in a year, while for a fish-finger sandwich the prices are up 21%.

A fry-up consisting of beans, sausages, bacon, eggs and toast is up 24%.

In the takeaway category, fish and chips saw the biggest rise, jumping 19% to £9 for one portion, followed by chicken and chips or a burger, both up 17% to £6.18 or £4.35.

The price of preparing for a boozy party has gone up 5%, being the average across all alcohol categories, with a can of pre-mixed spirits such as gin & tonic has gone up the most, 12%, followed by speciality bottled beer at 11%, and cans of bitter or flavoured cider at 9%.
