The Super Mario Bros Movie is the first film to make more than $1 billion at the global box office in 2023.
The animated comedy film surpassed 10 figures in estimated worldwide box-office receipts on Sunday, less than a month after it was released in cinemas, according to research firm Comscore as reported by The Wall Street Journal.
Per the WSJ report, the film has grossed more than $490 million in the United States and $532 million internationally.
It is the fifth film since the pandemic to hit the billion-dollar box office mark along with Avatar: The Way of Water, Spider-Man: No Way Home, Top Gun: Maverick, and Jurassic World: Dominion, the report said citing Box Office Mojo data.
It is also the highest-grossing film based on a video game of all time, according to Variety.
The box office success of films like The Super Mario Bros Movie has been welcome news for theatre chains, which have struggled since the pandemic. Following the film’s Easter long weekend in April, AMC reported its busiest week of the year to date and the third busiest week since December 2019.
Shares of Nintendo, which produces the Super Mario Bros franchise, also jumped on the film’s opening weekend success. In the year-to-date, however, Nintendo shares are down 1% at US$10.39.
