Prezzo to close 46 restaurants two years after administration

Italian restaurant Prezzo will close 46 of its sites, putting around 810 workers at risk of being axed.

The group currently has 143 venues and around 2,800 staff members.

The round of closures comes after the group noted soaring energy prices and growing food costs had slowed its route to recovery post-Covid.

This isn’t the group's first experience having to make cutbacks.

In 2020, Prezzo fell into administration, prompting a purchase by private equity firm Cain International.

At that time, it was forced to close 22 restaurants and cut 216 jobs.

“The last three years have been some of the hardest times I have ever seen for the high street and I'm extremely proud of the way our colleagues have retained Prezzo's position as an appealing, trusted, great value food and drink experience,” said Dean Challenger, chief executive.

He added that it had been hard to keep all sites remaining profitable in the face of “soaring inflation”, with the group experiencing energy bills doubling and the price of spaghetti jumping by 40%.

Organisations such as UKHospitality have been rallying for government support for companies in the sector.

Kate Nicholls, chief executive officer at UKHospitality said “The 20% level of inflation in food service we’re seeing alongside the £7.3 billion per annum in rising energy costs because of the reduction in government support, is unsustainable.

“Something has to be done or hospitality will look like a shell of itself in a year’s time.”

Some of the store closings include Glasgow, Brentwood, Mill Hill, and Oxford.
