BSF fails to impress with lab meat update

BSF Enterprise PLC (LSE:BSFA) said it expects to unveil a full fillet of lab-grown pork and “100% new meat strips” before the end of June, but investors did not seem very impressed as the shares fell 3.5% to a one-month low of 16.52p.

The Newcastle-based company’s wholly-owned 3D Bio-Tissues (3DBT) subsidiary is “on track” to present the cultivated meat at an event for “key shareholders”, which will involve data collection, inspection and analysis of the product in raw and cooked state.

This follows the production of its first 9 centimetre mini-fillet earlier in the year, which was made using its patented City Mix animal-free cell booster that means it is “100% meat” and eliminates the requirement of conventional plant-based ‘scaffolds’, blends or fillers that are adopted by the rest of the cultivated meat industry to ensure structural integrity.

Che Connon, Chief Executive of 3DBT, said:

"This is a significant scientific breakthrough which has very positive implications not just for BSF and 3DBT but also for the UK and the cultivated meat industry as a whole." #BSFA @3D_BioTissues #Biotech #Foodtech @CheConnon pic.twitter.com/ykPe9ZAFrr

The company also said 3DBT has become a project partner at the University of Bath’s cellular agriculture manufacturing hub, a government-funded initiative aiming to build manufacturing technologies that link cellular agriculture technologies to ensure a circular bioeconomy.

BSF said 3DBT will provide its cell and tissue-enhancing City-Mix products to other project partners.
