Rio Tinto, WH Smith and Rentokil trading updates due for Thursday

Thursday brings with it a whole host of results stretching from metal miners Rio Tinto PLC (LSE:RIO) to stationery retailers WH Smith PLC (LSE:SMWH).

Iron prices currently sit close to a three-month low, which is not good news for the mining titan, though no one seems to have any clear idea of where trends are at present.

The group reported a 38% drop in profits in 2022 on the back of lower iron ore prices as demand from China weakened.

Despite China’s post-Covid recovery looming, whether the country wants the key materials is another matter.

Dunelm Group PLC (LSE:DNLM) and WH Smith should give insights into different parts of the consumer psyche, while US tobacco giant Philip Morris International Inc (NYSE:PM)'s comments on vaping and the US groundswell growing against the alternative to smoking will be worth watching.

How much longer will WH Smith continue to squeeze a growing travel focused-business in with a declining high street newsagent is a question analysts have asked recently and often.

Dunelm’s third-quarter update could be a continuation of the bullish tone that accompanied the half-year results in February.

For investors of the retailer, gaining market share and sales growth may be a key focus as the group try to take advantage of a struggling John Lewis.

2022 was a big year for pest control company Rentokil Initial PLC (LSE:RTO), acquiring US rival Terminix in a US$6.7bln deal.

The Crawley-based firm has seen its shares rally recently, but investors may be keen to see how the company is tackling growing its operating margin before pushing them higher.
