Teladoc (NYSE:TDOC) said it is adding weight management and prediabetes programs, including the prescription of weight loss medications, to its Provider-Based Care programs, sending its share price higher.
The virtual care provider’s shares had added 11.5% at US$28.84 on Tuesday morning.
Teladoc (NYSE:TDOC)'s Provider-Based Care services are currently available for diabetes and hypertension programs, with weight management and prediabetes to be available from the third quarter of 2023.
The company noted the surge in popularity of new medications such as Glucagon-like peptide (GLP-1) agonists and Sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 (SGLT2) inhibitors for weight loss and diabetes prevention and management, which it said will be prescribed when clinically appropriate.
“There are exciting new options for those living with obesity and at higher risk of developing diabetes, but it is critical we support these individuals in a comprehensive manner and with a highly personalized and clinically appropriate treatment plan,” Teladoc (NYSE:TDOC) chief quality officer Jason Tibbels said in a statement.
“The combination of medication management and guidance with a personalized, goal-driven care plan ensures members receive the right care at the right time, getting them back on track.”
