Google CEO doesn't fully understand AI, interview reveals

In an insightful interview with Alphabet Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) and Google CEO, Sundar Pichai, he shared his perspective on the rapidly evolving world of artificial intelligence (AI) and its impact on society. Pichai emphasised the transformative potential of AI, while also acknowledging the challenges and ethical considerations that come with its development.

In the deep dive with 60 Minutes, the US current affairs show, he admitted he doesn't fully understand aspects of Bard, Google's chatbot. There was some consternation when the technology taught itself a language it wasn't programmed to learn. “I don't think we fully understand how a human mind works either,” Pichai added.

Here are the other highlights from that chat:

  • Sundar Pichai believes AI will impact every product across all companies
  • AI's potential to change jobs: some occupations may decline, while new job categories grow and existing jobs change due to AI assistance
  • Knowledge workers such as writers, accountants, architects, and software engineers are expected to be disrupted by AI
  • Google's AI chatbot, Bard, showcased its ability to write stories and poems with deep human-like understanding
  • The issue of "hallucinations" in AI models, where fabricated information is presented with confidence, is yet to be solved
  • Safety filters are built into Bard to screen for hate speech, bias and other harmful content
  • AI may exacerbate the spread of disinformation with fake news and fake images
  • Pichai is releasing advanced AI technologies slowly, allowing society to adapt and developers to gather user feedback and build robust safety measures
