Ondine making final preparations for phase III trial

Ondine Biomedical Inc (AIM:OBI) said it has made significant progress in preparing for its phase III clinical study to support the commercialisation of its Steriwave antimicrobial technology in the US.

The goal is to initiate the key trial in the second half of the year.

It has also begun clinical deployments of the technology in core target markets outside the States, where regulatory approval already exists, investors were told.

In a comprehensive update, the market heard Ondine has invested in the next generation of disposable light activator units, which are efficient, injection-moulded, and compatible with medication management and dispensing units used in large hospitals.

It also provided additional clinical endorsements in the form of pilot outcomes from a six-month study at The Ottawa Hospital reported in March that confirmed substantial reductions in patient readmission rates and significant reductions in the length of hospital stays for spine surgery patients.

The infection control team at the hospital was recognised with a Quality Improvement Award from the Ontario Surgical Quality Improvement Network.

Additionally, results from a University of Navarra Covid trial showed a significant decrease in viral infectivity in predominantly vaccinated patients.

The evaluation was the first randomised, placebo-controlled, blinded clinical study of nasal photodisinfection to treat an upper respiratory illness and opened the way for future pandemic preparedness planning.

Ondine has expanded further into the Canadian hospital market and initiated commercialisation in the UK, Spain and Mexico. It continues to build up its sales processes, key personnel, organisational infrastructure and inventory to support commercial growth objectives.

Ondine's chief executive, Carolyn Cross, said: "I am very pleased to be able to report that Ondine has taken significant steps forward in our clinical development and commercialisation strategy over the past year."

The company is the world leader in the development of photodisinfection, a non-antibiotic technology that kills all types of resistant and non-resistant pathogens without causing antimicrobial resistance.

Its lead indication is focused on reducing healthcare-associated infections via nasal photodisinfection prior to surgery.
