HSBC has former Express building on list of Canary Wharf HQ alternatives - report

HSBC is considering the former Fleet St offices of Goldman Sachs (NYSE:GS) as an alternative to its current head office in Canary Wharf, according to reports today.

A number of possibilities have been suggested to the bank, Bloomberg reported today, with the Goldman Sachs (NYSE:GS) office that at one time houses the Daily Express, high on the list.

HSBC is looking for around 500,000sq ft of space in time for 2027 when its Docklands lease expires, the report added.

Other options include the former home of the European Bank of Restructuring and Development at 175 Bishopsgate; BT Group’s former headquarters by St Paul’s and Wood Wharf next to Canary Wharf.

HSBC might also elect to stay put and refurbish its existing HQ, the report added.

The Asia-focused bank has faced calls to quit London and relocate its HQ to Hong Kong to reflect its business focus, though so far it has steadfastly refused to move away from London.
