Amazon’s Whole Foods closes flagship downtown San Francisco store after just one year over 'safety concerns'

Whole Foods Market has closed its flagship supermarket in downtown San Francisco just one year after opening due to safety concerns.

The organic food giant opened the Trinity Place store in San Francisco’s Tenderloin district in March 2022 after two years of strict coronavirus (COVID-19) restrictions severely impacted businesses in the area. However, according to reports, deteriorating street conditions resulted in widespread drug use, theft and aggressive behavior towards staff members.

“We are closing our Trinity location only for the time being,” a Whole Foods spokesperson said in a statement. “If we feel we can ensure the safety of our team members in the store, we will evaluate a reopening of our Trinity location.”

Last November, the San Francisco Standard reported that the Whole Foods store at Trinity Place had limited its store hours following ‘high theft’ and ‘hostile people,’ according to a statement from a store manager who was granted anonymity by the outlet.

The store closed its doors at the end of business on Monday.

Separately, Whole Foods is now reported to be exploring building commercial kitchens that would make prepared meals for its food bars and refrigerated cases. Back in early 2017, Whole Foods announced that it was closing three commercial kitchens as part of a broader effort to streamline operations and cut costs before Amazon.com Inc (NASDAQ:AMZN) acquired the company for $13.7 billion later that year.
