Cash App founder fatally stabbed in San Francisco

Cash App founder Bob Lee was fatally stabbed in an apparently random attack in San Francisco, his father confirmed on Facebook.

The 43-year-old, who was the chief executive of cryptocurrency company MobileCoin, died of injuries at the hospital following the attack.

Lee founded the mobile payment service in 2013 while he was chief technology officer at digital payments company, Block (formerly Square).

Block, which was co-founded by former Twitter boss Jack Dorsey, is the technology conglomerate that owns Cash App.

Aside from Cash App, Block also owns buy now, pay later service Afterpay, as well as Tidal, a music-subscription service which was formed by rapper Jay-Z before he sold an 80% stake to Block in 2021 for US$302mln.

One of Block’s investors is Cathie Wood’s Ark Invest, which across three of its ETFs holds 1.74% of Block’s total shares worth roughly US$650mln.

Block is Cathie Woods’ seventh largest holding, behind the likes of Zoom, Coinbase and Tesla, with roughly 4.97% of its total investments held in the company.

Shares in Block were down 1.7% to US$67.
