General Motors Company (NYSE:GM) had overtaken Ford Motor Company (NYSE:F) to become the second-best seller of electric vehicles (EVs) in the United States during the first quarter.
GM this week reported EV sales of 20,670 during 1Q, almost double that of Ford’s 10,866 EVs sold during the same period.
In a statement, Ford noted that its Mustang Mach-E sales were down 19.7% during the quarter, reflecting downtime at its Mexico plant for retooling changes to increase production.
Further, Ford was forced to suspend production of its F-150 lightning electric pickup truck in February to investigate a battery issue. Production resumed in March.
Both GM and Ford continue to lag behind industry leader Tesla, which delivered 422,875 EVs worldwide during the first quarter.
While Tesla does not report its sales by region, Motor Intelligence estimates that the company sold 161,630 EVs in the US during the quarter.
