McDonald’s is temporarily closing its US offices this week as the fast-food giant prepares to lay off an undisclosed number of corporate employees as part of a broader restricting effort announced earlier this year.
Per a report by the Wall Street Journal citing an internal email sent last week, staff were told to work from home from Monday through Wednesday to allow the company to deliver its layoff announcements virtually.
The company also told workers to cancel all in-person meetings with vendors and third parties at its headquarters.
McDonald’s unveiled its new growth strategy, Accelerating the Arches 2.0, in January and at the time CEO Chris Kempcinski said this would involve evaluating roles and staffing levels in parts of the organization.
While the number of employees impacted by the restructuring has not been formally announced, a person familiar with the matter told CNBC the company plans to lay off hundreds of workers.
The company employs about 150,000 people globally, with about 45,000 of these roles in its US offices and restaurants.
