Tesla has issued a voluntary recall of Semis manufactured with certain parking brake valve modules found to be defective just three months after the electric vehicle (EV) maker began deliveries of the highly anticipated, all-electric trucks.
Per filings with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, certain Tesla Semi trucks are equipped with a supplier-provided electronically controlled parking brake valve module that may intermittently fail to transition when the parking brake is engaged or disengaged, which could then result in the parking brakes not being set or released.
If the parking brakes are not engaged when the driver expects them to be and the driver releases the service brakes, the vehicle may unintentionally move, increasing the risk of a crash, the filing said.
35 trucks produced between November 30, 2022, and February 28, 2023, are affected.
As of March 24, Tesla did not report any warranty claims, crashes, injuries, or deaths due to the parking brake malfunction.
The EV maker will replace the parking brake valve module with a revised part with improved internals that prevents air leakage and allow the driver to engage and disengage parking brakes at no cost to the customer, according to the filings.
Tesla shares had added 6% at US$207.09 on Friday afternoon.
