Google's Photomath deal set for EU green light

Google is likely to receive unconditional EU antitrust clearance for its acquisition of the Croatian math app, Photomath, according to Reuters citing people close to the matter.

In recent months, merger deals involving US tech giants and start-ups have faced intense regulatory scrutiny on both sides of the Atlantic due to concerns that some acquisitions may be "killer acquisitions" aimed at eliminating emerging competitors.

Google, owned by Alphabet Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG), announced its intention to acquire Photomath in May of last year.

The Croatian company's investors include Menlo Ventures, LearnCapital, Goodwater Capital, GSV Ventures, and Cherubic. The European Commission is set to make a decision on the deal by March 28, but neither the commission nor Google has commented on the matter.

Founded by an engineer and father seeking to assist his children with math homework, Photomath has gained significant popularity, with over 300 million downloads worldwide and available in more than 30 languages.
