Amazon.com Inc workers could launch further strikes after labelling a pay rise from the retail giant “an insult”.
The eCommerce retailer had announced it would be raising starting salaries by 50p to between £11 and £12 an hour on Wednesday, though members from GMB Union suggested this was not enough.
"We're listening to Amazon workers and the message is very clear: this new pay rate is an insult,” GMB senior organiser Amanda Gearing said.
"So, in response, we will be consulting over the next few days and announcing a new wave of action."
Some 400 Amazon warehouse workers have repeatedly walked out of its Coventry facility in the past few months, in the first wave of strikes the company has ever faced in the UK.
GMB anticipated the action could have costed Amazon £2mln so far, with Wednesday’s announcement set to spell further headaches for the company as it tries to balance operating costs, having announced on Monday it would be laying off 9,000 staff.
Amazon shares dipped 2% to US$98.70 on Wednesday.
