Cambridge University’s contribution to UK economy 'almost four times that of Premier League'

An analysis of Cambridge University’s impact on the UK economy has found its financial contribution is almost four times greater than that of the Premier League.

According to a report by London Economics, commissioned by Cambridge University, the university adds nearly £30bn to the UK economy annually, supporting 86,000 jobs, including 52,000 positions in the East of England.

For every £1 spent by the university, it creates £11.70 of economic impact, and for every £1mln of publicly funded research income the university receives, it generates £12.65mln in economic impact across the UK, the report said.

“The university’s contribution to the UK economy is almost four times that of the Premier League,” London Economics noted.

“Very few government interventions bring higher economic benefits than investment in the university.”
