Ex-Barclays chief Jes Staley to be deposed in JPMorgan lawsuits over Epstein ties

Jes Staley, the former Barclays chief executive and ex-JP Morgan executive, faces a two-day deposition next week about his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein and his knowledge of his former client’s sex trafficking operation.

Lawyers for the bank on Thursday said they would depose Staley on March 23 and 24.

JPMorgan has accused Staley, its former head of private banking, of “intentional and outrageous conduct” in concealing information about Epstein.

The lawsuit is seeking Staley return eight years of compensation to the bank and reimburse it for damages the company may incur in other lawsuits.

JP Morgan is facing two separate lawsuits alleging it facilitated Epstein’s sex trafficking operation by failing to spot red flags.

The bank is being sued by prosecutors in the US Virgin Islands, where it is alleged much of Epstein’s illegal activities took place, and by a woman known only as Jane Doe 1.

Announcing their lawsuit against Staley last week, JP Morgan said: “While the conduct Epstein was accused of is despicable, the lawsuits against [JP Morgan] are misplaced and without merit.

“The plaintiffs have made troubling allegations concerning the conduct of our former employee Jes Staley, and if true he should be held responsible for his actions.”

Staley has previously acknowledged having been friendly with Epstein and expressed regret over their relationship, but has denied any knowledge of Epstein’s alleged crimes.

New York federal judge Jed Rakoff on Thursday set a new trial date for the US Virgin Islands and Jane Doe cases against JP Morgan for October 23, consolidating the two cases, and the countersuit by the bank against Staley.
