Trainline falls short of sales expectations due to rail strikes

Trainline PLC (LSE:TRN), the rail and coach ticket platform, said industrial action on the railways meant net sales fell short of expectations for the year to 28 February 2023.

Group net ticket sales grew to £4.3bn, 16% higher than in 2019, lower than previous guidance for three-year growth of between 18% and 27%.

Rail strikes were a £5mln to £6mln blow each day to the top line, Trainline said in a trading statement.

Sales, however, were up 72% on the previous year, while UK consumer net sales were 37% higher compared to the last pre-pandemic trading year, “reflecting continued recovery in underlying passenger volume and a significant step up in industry eticket usage.”

Revenue grew by 74% year-on-year to £327mln, which was 25% higher than in 2019.

"Trainline delivered record net ticket sales, with growth led by International Consumer, which became a €1 billion business for the first time,” said chief executive Jody Ford in the statement.

The company said it made “strong progress” against its strategic priorities, which included positioning itself as the aggregator of choice in Europe, digitising the commuter ticketing experience, and helping customers navigate industrial action.

"We have a core purpose to encourage more people to take the train, including by simplifying the retail experience and helping customers navigate the complexities of rail travel.

“Our determination to lead in this space - most recently through our 'I Came by Train' campaign - is winning support from the UK Government, industry and, most importantly, our customers,” Ford added
