The price of eggs has fallen for the first time in five months after reaching a record high as avian influenza killed more than 43 million egg-laying hens in 2022.
According to the latest Consumer Price Index (CPI) data released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics on Tuesday, egg prices fell 6.7% in February.
Year-over-year egg prices remain elevated, up 55.4%.
This was a significant improvement from the previous month where egg prices were up 8.5% month-over-month and 70.1% for the 12 months to January.
While the food index increased 0.4% in February, the meats, poultry, fish, and eggs index fell 0.1% during the month due to the decline in egg prices.
