Redx Pharma PLC (AIM:REDX) has said phase II data from the first group of patients being administered RXC004 for biliary tract cancer was not enough to support further development.
Researchers were assessing the drug's use on its own for a specific Wnt-ligand-dependent form of the disease. It is also being evaluated for use alongside a common checkpoint inhibitor, with the results still to come.
Redx set a high bar in the first group of 16 hard-to-treat people recruited to the trial – six months of progression-free survival.
It said some of the cohort had enjoyed durable clinical benefits, just not enough to push on into further analysis.
Instead, the team will assess the findings to “increase the understanding of the single agent activity of RXC004”.
"While today's results do not support further clinical development of RXC004 as monotherapy in recurrent BTC, where very few drugs have received regulatory approval as single agents in this hard-to-treat disease, they are nonetheless consistent with the overall hypothesis that RXC004 has potential as an active component of combination therapy,” said Redx chief medical officer, Dr Jane Robertson in the statement.
