Google’s CEO Sundar Pichai has defended the business' move to implement a desk-sharing policy for its cloud employees and partners at a company-wide meeting last week, according to audio obtained by CNBC.
Pichai reportedly said that many employees were only coming into the office two days a week, noting this was not the best use of its “expensive real estate.”
“To me, it’s obvious that they are trying to be efficient and save money but at the same time also utilize resources,” Pichai said.

“There are people, by the way, who routinely complain that they come in and there are big swaths of empty desks and it feels like it’s a ghost town — it’s just not a nice experience.”
The desk-sharing policy is currently just for cloud employees but Pichai noted that the company was “giving teams freedom to experiment.”
