Toblerone packaging will no longer be adorned with an image of the Matterhorn, that's because the brand's parent Mondelez (NASDAQ:MDLZ) is switching manufacturing from Switzerland to Slovakia.
The country switch is a response to “increased demand worldwide”, according to Mondelez (NASDAQ:MDLZ).
Mondelez (NASDAQ:MDLZ), the confectionary giant which also owns brands such as Cadburys and Oreo, said it would be replacing the representation of Switzerland's famous Matterhorn peak with a more generic mountain and a representation of Toblerone's founder’s signature.
The Matterhorn is one of the most recognisable peaks in the Alps where it sits on the border between Italy and Switzerland.
Swiss law prevents companies from using Swiss imagery or symbols to advertise milk-based food products unless those products are exclusively made in the country.
Toblerone was originally sold in the Swiss capital of Bern in 1908 and has had varying Swiss images on its packaging prior to the Matterhorn including a Bernese bear and eagle.
US snacks conglomerate Mondelez said: "Bern is an important part of our history and will continue to be so for the future."
Mondelez made US$3.2bln in underlying earnings in 2022, a 26% fall year on year whilst progressing its plan to focus on reducing operating costs in 2023, under its “Simplify to Grow Program”.
