Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc (NASDAQ:WBA) will not dispense abortion pills by mail in the 20 states represented by Republican attorneys general who warned the company that it would be breaking the law to do so, according to a spokesperson.
The decision was in response to a letter from the attorneys general, a spokesperson for the retailer said, per reports. The company intends to become a certified pharmacy and said it would only dispense in jurisdictions where it was legal to do so.
However, the list includes states where abortion is still currently legal, including Alaska, Iowa, Kansas and Montana.
The move to dispense mifepristone pills via mail was made possible by a decision from the US Food and Drug Adminstration in January, which allowed retail pharmacies to dispense the pills, provided they are certified under special safety rules for the drug.
Mifepristone, used in combination with another drug, misoprostol, is approved for abortion within the first 10 weeks of pregnancy.
Medical abortions make up more than half of abortions in the US and are under increased risk after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in June.
