Norsk Titanium moves into lucrative aerospace repair market

Norsk Titanium (OTCQX:NORSF) said it is eyeing the multi-billion-dollar aerospace repair market for its Rapid Plasma Deposition (RPD) process.

The firm revealed that it has adapted its RPD additive process to the re-manufacture of link tubes originally produced using a Ti 6-4 laser powder bed additive process.

The work is part of a contracted effort with Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace (KONGSBERG).

Norsk told shareholders that it developed a proprietary adaptation of its RPD process that located the affected link tube surfaces and made the precision depositions “in a rapid six-week timeline.”

The link tubes were then sent to KONGSBERG for final processing.

Odd Terje Lium, Norsk Titanium (OTCQX:NORSF)’s vice president of engineering, called the move an important step in the technology development plan.

“This effort establishes that the RPD process can support repairs for applications such as turbine fan blades and offshore drilling refurbishment,” the vice president said in a statement.

“With this effort, we have proven that our RPD can be applied to component repairs, allowing our customers to reuse or repair existing parts, avoiding the cost and schedule of a new production run.”

Proof of concept articles were produced by Norsk Titanium (OTCQX:NORSF) and delivered to KONGSBERG as prototypes in December 2022. KONGSBERG then evaluated the adapted RPD process and approved it for implementation on 250 production parts, according to the company.

Norsk Titanium is currently performing the re-manufacture operations with all parts to be delivered back to KONGSBERG by the end of the first quarter of 2023.

Based in Hønefoss, Norway, Norsk is a global leader in Directed Energy Deposition (DED) additive manufacturing for aerospace-grade structural titanium components.
