E-sports goes mainstream in Japan with launch of first-ever high school dedicated to the sport

Japan has a strong reputation in the world of e-sports, having hosted major events such as the Tokyo Game Show and the Evolution Championship Series.

Last year, the country took a significant step forward by opening its first e-sports high school in Tokyo, known as esports Koutou Gakuin.

This innovative school is the result of collaboration between the Tokyo Metropolitan Board of Education NTTe-Sports and Japanese pro soccer team Tokyo Verdy’ Esports team.

This opening comes at a time when the e-sports industry is thriving in Japan, the Japanese government has officially recognised e-sports as a sport in 2018, leading to increased support and funding for e-sports events and education.

Curriculum

The school provides a unique curriculum that focuses on the development of skills necessary to become a successful professional e-sports player, such as game theory, team communication, and physical and mental well-being.

Despite this specialised focus, students at the e-sports high school will also receive a standard Japanese high school education.

Thriving environment

Students will have the opportunity to learn from experienced teachers, gain practical experience through partnerships with e-sports companies and teams, and participate in tournaments, internships, and other e-sports events.

Graduates of the e-sports high school will be well-equipped to pursue a range of careers, from e-sports professionals and streamers to VR creators, programmers, game writers and designers.
