The Wendy's Company (NASDAQ:WEN) is planning to bring hundreds of fast food locations to Australia, according to chief development officer Abigail Pringle.
There’s just one problem. Wendy’s already exists in Australia, as popular ice cream and hotdog chain Wendy’s Milk Bar.
“There can’t be two Wendy’s,” said Dean Tully, who owns a Wendy’s Milk Bar in Whyalla, Australia. “They can come to Australia and strut their stuff by all means but I wouldn’t want it to be under the Wendy’s banner.”
It wouldn’t be the first time an American fast food chain changed its name to move down under. Burger King locations are called Hungry Jack’s in Australia, due to an existing trademark in the country.
Regardless of what the name ends up being, Pringle believes Australia is a prime market for Wendy’s never-frozen square burgers and Frosty ice cream treats, she told The Australian Financial Review.
There is no timeline for the company's first Australian location.
