Nokia updates its logo because people are convinced it still makes phones

Nokia doesn’t make mobile phones anymore, and it hasn’t since 2014 — at least that’s what its latest logo redesign wants people to believe.

In a blog post, the Finnish telecommunications company unveiled an angular, minimalistic logo, distinct from the previous logo associated with the cult classic “Nokia brick” phones.

Evidently, that brand association was still a prominent one, despite Nokia selling its mobile phone division to Microsoft in 2014.

“In most people’s minds, we are still a successful mobile phone brand, but this is not what Nokia is about,” Nokia CEO Pekka Lundmark said to Bloomberg.

“We want to launch a new brand that is focusing very much on the networks and industrial digitalization, which is a completely different thing from the legacy mobile phones.”

These days, Nokia is primarily in the networking equipment business and also makes money by licensing its patents.

The company is also moving into the 5G sector.

Shares of Nokia added 2.7% to $4.70 in New York Monday morning.
